How Many Bottles Is a Normal Goal?

Most adults need 4 to 6 standard 500 ml bottles a day. With a big 32 oz or 40 oz bottle, that drops to 2 or 3 refills.

Daily goal 500 ml (16.9 oz) 24 oz 32 oz 40 oz 1 L
2,000 ml 4 about 2.8 about 2.1 about 1.7 2
2,500 ml 5 about 3.5 about 2.6 about 2.1 2.5
3,000 ml 6 about 4.2 about 3.2 about 2.5 3

Your own goal depends on your weight, your activity and the weather. The water intake calculator works it out, and this page picks it up on its own in the same browser.

Common Bottle Sizes in ml and oz

Bottle labels mix units, which is why counting bottles gets confusing. These are the sizes most people carry.

Bottle Millilitres US fluid ounces
Standard water bottle 500 ml 16.9 oz
Sports bottle 710 ml 24 oz
Large bottle 946 ml 32 oz
Big tumbler 1,183 ml 40 oz
Litre bottle 1,000 ml 33.8 oz

Bottles Next to the Official Numbers

The US National Academies found that healthy men drink about 3.0 L of fluids a day and women about 2.2 L. In 500 ml bottles, that is 6 bottles for men and about 4 and a half for women.

Those figures count every drink, including tea, coffee and milk. If you drink two mugs of tea, you can take a bottle off your count. Our guide to how much water you should drink a day explains the full range.

Big Bottles, Small Sips

A big bottle makes your goal feel easy, but pace matters more than size. NIOSH advises no more than 6 cups (about 1.4 L) in one hour, even on a hot, hard work day, according to its heat guidance.

A full 40 oz tumbler holds almost that much. Sip it over a morning instead of finishing it in one go.

If a gallon jug tempts you, read whether a gallon of water a day is too much first.

Common Questions

How many 16.9 oz bottles make 64 ounces?

About four. Four 16.9 oz bottles hold 67.6 oz, just over 64 oz.

Is 3 bottles of water a day enough?

Three 500 ml bottles make 1.5 litres. That is below the drinks most adults need, unless food, tea and coffee make up the rest.

How many times should I refill my reusable bottle?

It depends on the bottle and on you. Using the US average drinks of about 74 oz for women and 101 oz for men:

Bottle Women (74 oz) Men (101 oz)
24 oz about 3 fills about 4 fills
32 oz about 2 and a third about 3
40 oz about 2 about 2 and a half

Tea, coffee and milk count toward those totals, so your real refills may be fewer.

How many 16.9 oz bottles make a gallon?

About 7 and a half. A US gallon is 128 fl oz (3.79 L), per NIST's conversion table, and 128 รท 16.9 = 7.6.

Does the calculator round up?

Yes, the count rounds up, and the last bottle shows how full it needs to be. Fill the last bottle that far and you reach your goal.
